Purpose of award: To reward students for their research-based essays to promote participation and communication in science.
Eligibility requirements: Applicants must be students in grade 7 through 12 who are currently enrolled in a public, private, parochial or home school in the United States, Canada, the U.S. territories or in a U.S.-sponsored school abroad. The essays must be based on studies in school or an educational program and the theme that is the same every year: "Scientific Discovery Begins with Expeditions!" Students may choose a topic in biology, earth science or astronomy and take an expedition to an area where they can explore their topic. The expedition does not have to be complicated. Each essay must include a list of references. Essays are judged primarily on scientific merit.
