This program was created to honor the first teacher scheduled to teach from space – Christa McAuliffe – who, along with the rest of the 7-man crew, perished in the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster shortly after lift off in January 1986. Today this program stands as a tribute to her love of teaching by offering loans to qualified students majoring in education who are residents of Delaware.
Besides being an education major, students must be a high school senior with a minimum combined SAT score of 1570, and rank in the top half of their class. Undergraduate students with a GPA of 2.75 may also apply for this program. Loans may not exceed the cost of tuition, fees and other direct costs. Loan may be repaid at the rate of one year teaching in a Delaware public school in exchange for one year of loan.
Requirements for application are an essay, transcript, and SAT scores. Please visit the website for deadline particulars: www.doe.k12.de.us/programs/dhec/how_to_apply/financial_aid.
